Double matboards (also called borders or mats) consist of two matboards (top and bottom). The window (opening) of the bottom mat surrounds the image. The top mat covers the bottom mat. It has a larger window, which allows a small border of the bottom mat, called the reveal, to be shown.
The double mat typically shows a small amount of one colour and a larger amount of a second colour which can be especially effective in enhancing colours in the artwork.
The advantage of using a matboard when framing your artwork is that it achieves a professional finish with its precision-cut edges and corners, it can complement the colours in the artwork – emphasising the low lights and highlights as well as ensuring the image doesn’t touch the glass which could result in damage to the artwork by its possible fusion to the glass.
