Mounting and Matboards for Picture Frames

This is one of three parts of Frames Now’s series on conservation framing:

  • Conservation Framing for Preservation of Framed Artworks
  • Mounting and Matboards for Picture Frames
  • How and Where to Correctly Hang a Picture Frame

Why Artworks Should Never Touch the Glass in a Picture Frame

One of the most important rules of professional picture framing is that artworks should never be in direct contact with the glass (also known as glazing) of a picture frame.

If inks, pastels, pen, graphite, or paint sit against the glass, they can easily transfer onto it. Even worse, if condensation or humidity enters the frame, moisture can cause the artwork to stick permanently to the glass, damaging both the artwork and the glass itself. Once this happens, restoration is often impossible.

How to Prevent Artwork Sticking to Glass

To avoid this kind of damage, professional framers always create space between the artwork and the glass. This is done using a framing matboard or spacer.

What is a Matboard?

A matboard (also known as a mounting board, mount board, card insert, or card surround) is a material placed around the artwork within the frame. It creates a small air gap that prevents contact with the glass helping to protect the artwork from damage caused by condensation or adhesion.

Framing with Matboard: Function and Design

Space Between Artwork and Glass

While its primary role is protection, a framing matboard also plays an important role in the overall look of a frame.

Matboard Design Tips

A well-chosen framing matboard should enhance the visual impact of the framed artwork. With a wide range of acid-free matboard colours available, it is easy to select a matboard that complements the tones and style of the artwork.

When the matboard is selected carefully, it should draw the eye toward the artwork, not away from it. A good matboard design will never overpower the image or cause distraction.

Why Acid-Free Matboards Are Essential

The quality of the matboard used in framing is critical for the long-term preservation of the artwork. Low-quality matboards often contain acids that will slowly damage the artwork, causing discolouration and deterioration over time.

To avoid this:

  • Always request an acid-free matboard from your picture framer.
  • For the highest level of protection, choose a cotton rag board, which offers superior archival quality.

At Frames Now, we use only acid-free and cotton rag matboards in our conservation framing. This ensures that your artwork is not only beautifully presented but also preserved for many years to come.
